What is a Mat Class?

Mat Classes are group classes that meet weekly. We try to keep these classes at The Pilates Center relatively small so we can offer you as much individual attention as possible in a group class setting. Most of our classes are mixed level so beginners as well as intermediate and advanced students can participate. Our instructors are skilled at teaching to different levels by using modifications and variations of traditional Pilates exercises.

Mat class exercises take place on a mat, on the floor. Some small equipment is used such as- resistance bands and circles, fitness balls, and light hand weights.

Mat Class exercises focus on Core strength and stability with some leg and arm work.

How do I sign up for a Mat Class?

Most of The Pilates Center’s group Mat Classes are drop in classes. This means that you can come whenever you want! No need to pre-register or sign up for a certain amount of classes. If you are coming to a Mat Class for the first time we suggest arriving 5-10 minutes early giving your instructor the opportunity to learn about any injuries or concerns you may have.

The Pilates Center has class cards available, making the cost of each class less. These class cards can be used at any of our weekly drop in group classes, at either studio. These cards expire after one year.

Drop in classes are $15 each
a 6 class card is $75 ($12.50 for each class)
a 10 class card is $120 ($12 for each class)
a 25 class card is $240 ($9.60 for each class)
and a one year unlimited card is $965.00 (at 3 classes
a week this is less then $6.50 per class!)

What is an Apparatus lesson?

These lessons will teach you the method using the Pilates apparatus. Our studios are each equipped with at least 4 springboards, 3 reformers, 1 trap table, 2 wunda chairs, 1 ladder barrel and an assortment of other smaller pieces of equipment and apparatus.

You will be able to choose private(1 client at a time...highly suggested when you first begin), semi private (2 clients at a time), trio (3 clients at a time) or independent (no instructor guiding you) lessons. We can help you arrange so you work out with a friend, or we can pair you up with someone.

The Pilates Center encourages working with a different teacher from time to time to keep your workout fresh, challenging and exciting.

We also have Group Apparatus Classes available at specific times throughout the week. You will need to pre-register for these in order to save your spot.

Where should I start? Mat classes or Apparatus lessons?

There are pros to starting with both. It is not required to do one before the other. Mat classes are a less expensive way to try out Pilates and see if it is for you. Apparatus lessons are good to start with so you immediately notice and correct the sublties of proper alignment that may go unnoticed in a group class. Also, apparatus lessons are individualized workouts created for you after a verbal and postural analysis whereas mat classes are more general workouts geared towards the group

What are your hours?

We have a set weekly mat class schedule and then schedule appointments by the hour. Generally we are here Monday thru Friday 8am-7pm and Saturday 8-2pm.

Why do I get the voicemail so often?

Because we are seeing clients on an hourly basis it is common that the voicemail will answer most phone calls. Please leave a message and know that we check the voicemail very often

How many times a week should I do Pilates?

Three workouts a week is a general guideline, especially if Pilates is your primary source of exercise. These workouts can be a combination of apparatus work and mat work (whether at home our at the studio).

If Pilates is a supplement to other forms of physical activity three times a week may not be necessary. Your instructor can help find a balance that works best for you, depending on your goals.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable fitting clothes that you can easily move it. It is important not wear very loose clothing so your instructor can see your alignment throughout the exercises. Most people wear t-shirts and yoga pants. Because you won’t be wearing shoes we suggest that you have socks on.

What should I expect at my first Apparatus session?

We start new clients out with the Introductory Package (3 private sessions). The very first time you come in expect that you won’t be moving a lot. It is very important that your instructor and you do a thorough intake so your instructor can become familiar with your body and personal situations (present and past injuries, goals, other forms of exercise, etc.) Your instructor will ask you questions and then do a postural assessment in order to design a safe and challenging workout for you.

Will I lose weight doing Pilates?

Pilates is not cardiovascular workout. You WILL tone and strengthen and lose inches but if your goal is weight loss you will have to supplement your Pilates workouts with cardiovascular exercise. Your instructor can guide you as you decide what your weight loss plan will be.
